Young adults and opioids

Opiate addiction has become big problem across the country. For young people in particular, being introduced to painkillers early on can lead to addiction and possible legal problems.

In a recent story, the Tennessean profiled a young woman who has dealt with opiate addiction. It’s an unfortunately all too common story.

The story references the concerns from addiction specialists. When people are introduced to painkillers at a young age, they are more likely to become addicted. Because of this, they are seeing more people in their late teens and early 20s addicted to painkillers or similar drugs.

It also becomes easier for people to get their hands on drugs because they are so common. Many young people who become abusers get their drugs from someone they know.

Legal issues

While the primary concern with someone addicted to painkillers is getting them treatment, there are also drug laws to contend with. If someone is in possession of drugs that are not prescribed to them, they could face serious consequences.

Addiction to painkillers also often lead people to buy cheaper drugs, such as heroin, on the street. If they are caught taking part in a sale or in possession of a legal substance, they will likely contend with legal ramifications in addition to dealing with their addiction.

Getting back on track

Overcoming drug addiction could mean both seeking treatment and contending with the court system. In some cases, depending on the criminal charge, a judge may order a treatment program instead of jail time.

There is no easy answer when it comes to drugs. If you or someone you know is using a substance, it is important to seek help.
