Tennessee residents may be interested to learn that law enforcement agencies across the U.S. made 1.57 million drug-related arrests in 2016. This arrest number represented a 5.63 percent increase over 2015. Nevertheless, the Trump administration and Attorney General Jeff Sessions are reportedly set on "re-starting" the drug war.
According to a report from the Drug Policy Alliance, a majority of Americans are for legalizing marijuana. Furthermore, many Tennessee residents support the idea that people should not be taken into custody or jailed because they were in possession of or using drugs. However, data shows that there was one person taken into custody every 25 seconds on average for a drug crime in 2016.
Speaking before the annual meeting of the National Alliance for Drug Endangered Children, U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions last week laid out federal priorities for fighting the opioid overdose epidemic and other drug crimes.
